There are some cities so ancient that you can literally feel the age radiating off of the buildings, sometimes out of the very ground.
Hi guys, it’s me again, Shelby, and I have to admit that I was absolutely floored when Ralph told me that we were going to Athens.“The Athens?” I said, astounded. “You mean like Athens, Greece?”
Anyone who knows me understands that history is one of my fetishes. I mean, I love a good party and getting out and being active is a must for me, but being able to visit a place that is as steeped in history as Athens is was the chance of a lifetime.
Did you know that Athens is one of the world’s oldest cities? That’s right; it has a recorded history that dates back some 3,400 years. That is a long, long time. But it isn’t just the fact that it is old that makes Athens so fascinating, it is the fact that the roots of modern western civilization and the birth of democracy can be traced back to this very city.
Just think, Athens is the home to philosophy; home to Plato’s Academy as well as Aristotle’s Lyceum, both of which were major centers of learning and the arts in the ancient world, and even though modern day Athens is a richly cosmopolitan city and the center of the Greek world of finance, industry and politics and one of the most fun loving cities on the planet.
The city that gave us the Olympics and the Greek Pantheon is also packed to the gills with awesome experiences. Wander down the streets and you’ll find ancient temples sandwiched in- between coffee shops and discos. Could there be any place half as charming that incorporates the old and the new so seamlessly?
From the Acropolis to Philopappos Hill and the traditional Greek parties to be found in the Monastiraki neighborhood, you are not going to run out of things to do here in Athens. From biking into the neighboring hillsides to exploring the shops in the heart of the city, Athens, Greece has more to offer by volume than almost any other city in the Mediterranean.
Since there is absolutely no way that I can cover everything that needs to be said about Athens in one short article, I’m going to have to expand a bit so you can get a feel for the flavor of the city that I have found and the absolutely awesome welcome that we’ve received here. Truly, from the food to the music to the breathtaking views and the rich underlying veins of history, Athens is one of those places that find its way into your heart and never leave.
I have a feeling that you are going to love this city as much as I do!
Bye for now!
Love, Shelby (S.O.S)
